Special Days

There is often no special occasion or reason for flowers to be sent. Often the best time to send flowers is on the spur of the moment, so that the recipient is very surprised by the gesture, and by sending flowers, you are passing on a message of love or friendship.

Along with birthdays and anniversaries there are two days in the UK calendar that attract the highest demand on the florists, and that is Valentines Day in February and Mother's Day in March.

Valentines' Day

The popularity of sending flowers on February 14th, Valentine's Day, has risen since the 17th Century, and it is believed that the tradition arose at the time of the Roman Empire. St. Valentine is the patron saint of all lovers and traditionally roses are sent on this day, as it is believed that these were the favourite flowers of Venus, the Roman God of Love and the mother of Cupid. The red rose represents passion, while the white rose represents purity, and this is why the most popular roses to be sent on Valentine's Day are red, white or pink.

Due to the high demand for flowers to be arranged and delivered on Valentine's Day it is very important that you contact your local florist, or the florist that is local to the recipient early to book your special romantic bouquet to avoid any disappointment.

Mother's Day

The history of Mothering Sunday can be traced back to Ancient Greece when they were known to spend a day honouring Rhea, the Mother of the Gods. It has been more of a tradition in the UK since the 17th Century when servants were allowed to go home for one day to see their mothers and they would pick a bunch of spring flowers on the way home as a token of their love. Traditionally Mothering Sunday falls on the 4th Sunday of Lent.

In modern times we no longer go and pick some spring flowers but use florists to create a bouquet for our mothers to show them our appreciation and love for them. Since Mother's Day falls in March, bouquets and arrangements are normally made with spring flowers, but florists have such a wide selection of flowers available, the choice is yours.
